Satoshi Tajiri Real Real Real 1996 Interview Confirming FallingRedShipping
This is a never-before-seen interview from Satoshi Tajiri, which has only recently been unearthed and translated by our lovely translation team here at Capsu-Mania. It was first published in the Feburary of 1996, in NADEL NACHT, a very rare German-Japanese gaming magazine with few surviving copies--in this specific issue's case, it was recalled just one day after publication due to the fact that it contained 50 tons of abestos sandwiched between the pages. Thankfully, I was able to get my hands on the only confirmed authentic copy, and have translated this interview from it for you all to read! Enjoy!
NADEL NACHT: ISSUE 1996 FEBRUARY
Featuring: Satoshi Tajiri (of Game Freak)
Topic: Pocket Monsters Red and Green Character Design Secrets
Part 1 ~ "The Red-Hot Passion Behind Red"
- Tajiri-san, congratulations on the release of Pocket Monsters. Surely you have been interviewed many times about the Pokémon designs...
Satoshi Tajiri: Thank you. I have.
- But I find the humans quite interesting, too. The main character, Red (レッド), has a very striking, determined design. What was the inspiration behind him?
Satoshi Tajiri: Hm... Red represents the adventurous side of childhood, doing things collecting insects and exploring the world. But if I am being completely honest, there is a much deeper, secret purpose behind his design. Something I have not told the press until today.
- Oh, an exclusive? Please do share.
Satoshi Tajiri: (laughs) When Ken Sugimori and I were conceptualizing Red's design, from the sprite to the art in the handbook, I had a sudden, profound vision of the future...
- !!
Satoshi Tajiri: My secret designing Red is that he is actually the "waifu" of a person who will be born in... well, over 5 years.
- ...I beg your pardon? Waifu? Someone born at least 5 years from now? Tajiri-san, what do these words mean?
Satoshi Tajiri: It cannot be changed... I am sure my vision is true. Even if I am not sure what it means either.
- That is fascinating...!!
(Archivist Note: Following this statement, it is thought that Tajiri blankly stared at the tape recorder for the rest of the interview, even after the interviewer moved on. However, this is only rumored, as the original audio tape the interview was recorded on has since been lost.)
